A custom linear motor vibrates a spring at roughly 60Hz, causing the spring to resonate in a standing wave. 12 banks of LEDs behind the spring strobe at the driving frequency, giving the illusion that the spring is stationary. By varying the frequency and relative phase of the banks of strobes, the spring can be made to appear to hold stationary, move, dance, and split into parts, all while being physically driven in the same simple manner.

This is not a computer graphic animation. This is a physical vibrating strobed spring.
